CANINE CASTAWAYS, INC.
Changing the World One Dog at a Time Since 2003!
Adoption
Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment and is a responsibility that should be taken very seriously. Our dogs may have been lost, abandoned, abused or surrendered by a previous family and may require time to adjust to a new home. Please be sure that the ENTIRE family is ready to add a dog to the home. Many times there will be more than one application for a dog but we strive to match each dog with the most appropriate family. Please consider your lifestyle both today and in the future when applying for a dog.
Filling out an ADOPTION APPLICATION is the first step in adopting a new furry family member.
You should receive confirmation once you submit your application. If you do not, your application did not go through. Please verify all questions are answered and resubmit. If you continue to have issues, please let us know. Once your application is received, property ownership is verified and your references (Veterinary, Landlord, etc) are checked. The landlord / property owner must give the OK for adoption of a dog. The veterinary reference is specifically used to establish a consistent history of routine pet care. PLEASE NOTE: Incomplete applications cause a delay. Providing false or misleading information, no landlord approval or an inadequate veterinary history will result in the application being DECLINED. It is important that all applicants understand that it is the policy of Canine Castaways, Inc. that ALL pets in a possible adoptive home be spayed/neutered, on heartworm prevention and have a proper veterinary history unless there is a medical reason for not doing so. This information must be verified with your vet. Your vet reference is also used to establish a history of pet care. After verification, your application will then be forwarded to a volunteer to set up a home visit. Once you are approved for a dog, you will be invited to meet the dog at a date and time convenient to the foster family or at an adoption event.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS TO ADOPT A PUPPY UNDER 16 WEEKS OLD : We only consider applications within our local area - 1 hour or less from Arcadia FL. You must live in a single family home in order to be considered - puppies of this age cannot be in grassy or common areas where any other unknown dogs have been so places like condos, apartments, villa homes, etc. are not options. We do require that you have recent verifiable dog/puppy history and excellent vet history in order to be considered for adoption of a puppy. IF YOU DO NOT MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
Our goal is to place healthy, well-adjusted dogs. All of our dogs are vet checked including spayed or neutered; heartworm tested (prevention dispensed if negative and treatment started if positive); up to date on vaccinations (rabies, parvo, distemper); basic blood test performed; urinalysis; placed on flea/tick preventative if needed; intestinal parasite exam performed and treated accordingly; and provided with any other medical care necessary (dentals, surgeries, etc). All dogs have a numbered stainless steel Canine Castaways ID tag and are also microchipped for permanent identification. All vet records are provided to the adopter along with the remainder of the 6 month supply of heartworm prevention dispensed. Our adoption donation, which is normally $300 for an adult dog, $400 for a puppy or $750 for special breed puppy, is to help offset these veterinary expenses. We also have reduced donations for senior dogs 8 years and older ($150). Adoption donations can be paid by check, cash or credit card. Our adoption contract allows for a dog to be returned within 30 calendar days for a full refund regardless of the reason; otherwise, all donations are non-refundable after that time. If any significant pre-existing undiagnosed medical problems arise within the first month after adoption, Canine Castaways will cover the cost of treatment at our vet Fur-Ever Friends Animal Hospital. If for any reason you decide you no longer can keep your adopted dog, the dog MUST be returned to Canine Castaways.
